Solar Combiner Box Pakistan 2026 — Residential + Commercial Wiring + BOM Guide

by CNC Electric Pakistan 05 Jun 2026

A solar combiner box is the small enclosure where multiple PV strings come together before feeding the inverter. It looks simple from outside — a sealed plastic or metal box with one main output cable — but inside sits the most safety-critical components of a Pakistani solar install: DC breakers, gPV fuses, surge protectors, and an isolator. Build it right and your install passes NEPRA inspection on the first visit. Build it wrong and you get a rejection letter, a re-quote, and a delayed feed-in tariff.

This guide covers solar combiner box wiring in Pakistan for 2026, the residential 2-string vs commercial 6-string layouts, the exact CNC components needed inside, and the NEPRA 2026 + IEC 62548 compliance points DISCO inspectors check.

1. What goes in a solar combiner box

Component Function NEPRA / IEC standard
DC fuses (one + and one − per string) Per-string overcurrent protection IEC 60269-6 gPV class
DC breakers (one per string) Manual disconnect + auto-trip IEC 60947-2
DC SPD (string-side) Surge protection from lightning / switching IEC 61643-31
DC isolator (main output) Single-action shutdown for maintenance IEC 60947-3
Earth busbar Common earth point for all DC equipment IEC 62548
Cable glands Sealed wire entry IP65 minimum
Enclosure Houses everything, IP-rated for outdoor IP65 / IP66

2. Standard layouts — residential vs commercial

2.1 Residential 2-string layout (5–8 kW systems)

  • 2 strings of 5–10 panels each → 2 fuses (+) + 2 fuses (−) + 2 DC breakers + 1 DC SPD + 1 DC isolator
  • Enclosure: 250×400×160 mm IP65 plastic box
  • CNC bill of materials: ~PKR 18,000-22,000

2.2 Commercial 6-string layout (15–25 kW systems)

  • 6 strings → 6 fuses (+) + 6 fuses (−) + 6 DC breakers + 2 DC SPDs (input + output) + 1 main DC isolator + 1 earth busbar
  • Enclosure: 400×600×200 mm IP65 metal box
  • CNC bill of materials: ~PKR 65,000-85,000

2.3 Industrial 1500V multi-string (above 50 kW)

  • Up to 12 strings, 14×51 14×51 cartridge fuses (1500V), industrial-rated DC breakers and SPDs
  • Metal enclosure with built-in heating element for condensation control
  • CNC bill of materials: ~PKR 180,000-250,000

3. Complete CNC bill of materials for a residential 5 kW install

Component CNC part Qty Unit PKR Subtotal
DC fuse 20A 1000V gPV YCF8-PV-10/38-20A 4 (2×+ and 2×−) 1,150 4,600
DC fuse holder 10×38 DIN YCF8-HOLDER-10/38 4 650 2,600
DC breaker 16A 500V PV YCB8-1P-16A-500V-PV 2 1,950 3,900

DC isolator 32A 1000V YIS-DC-32-2P-1000V 1 3,400 3,400
Earth busbar 6-way YCS6-EB-6 1 950 950
IP65 enclosure 250×400×160 plastic YCS6-ENC-25040016 1 4,800 4,800
Cable glands M20 YCS6-CG-M20 8 180 1,440
DC cable 6 mm² (interconnect) YCC-DC-6MM-PV 10 m 180 1,800
Total residential 2-string 28,990

4. Wiring sequence (the order matters)

  1. Wire PV input: each string's + and − cables enter through cable glands at the bottom of the enclosure.
  2. Each string + goes through its fuse holder → fuse → busbar.
  3. Each string − goes through its fuse holder → fuse → busbar.
  4. From positive busbar → through DC breaker → through DC SPD common → through DC isolator → output cable to inverter PV+.
  5. From negative busbar → through DC breaker → through DC SPD common → through DC isolator → output cable to inverter PV−.
  6. SPD earth terminal → via the shortest possible wire → to enclosure earth busbar → to building earth electrode.
  7. Cable glands tightened, enclosure sealed, label with "DC SOLAR — HIGH VOLTAGE DO NOT TOUCH" warning.

5. Installation location

  • Mount on a vertical wall at 1.5-1.8 m height (operator access)
  • Outdoor: under shade or in a covered area — direct sun on enclosure shortens SPD life by 30-40%
  • Indoor: ventilated room, away from flammable materials
  • Minimum 50 cm clearance for door swing + maintenance access
  • Separate from any moisture source (especially in monsoon-belt Lahore)

6. FAQ

Can I build a combiner box myself?

Yes — the components are all DIN-rail and the wiring is straightforward. Pakistani licensed electricians routinely build combiner boxes in 90 minutes from CNC parts. For NEPRA inspection, the install must be signed by a Pakistan-licensed electrical engineer.

What size enclosure do I need?

250×400×160 for 2-string residential. 400×600×200 for up to 6-string commercial. Add 30% more space for industrial 1500V systems due to larger cartridge sizes.

Do all 4 fuses (2×+ and 2×−) really need to be installed?

Per NEPRA 2026 + IEC 62548 best practice: yes. Both polarities need protection. Some legacy installs cheap out with single-polarity fuses; these typically fail NEPRA 2026 inspection.

Where does the lightning rod connect?

The lightning rod has its own dedicated down-conductor and earth electrode separate from the building earth. The DC SPD in the combiner box bonds to the building earth electrode. These two earth systems are typically bonded together at the main earth point per IEC 62305.

Are CNC components NEPRA-approved?

Yes — CNC DC breakers, fuses, SPDs, and isolators are IEC-certified per the applicable IEC 60947-2/3, 60269-6, 61643-31. Pakistani DISCO inspectors recognize CNC paperwork and approvals are routine.
