Surge Arrester & Lightning Arrester Price Pakistan 2026 — Type I, II, III Guide

by CNC Electric Pakistan 04 Jun 2026

Lightning kills electronics in Pakistan more than anywhere else in the region. Monsoon-belt cities (Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Multan) see strikes within a kilometre dozens of times each rainy season, and every nearby strike pushes a voltage transient into the grid that fries inverters, ACs, fridges, and computers downstream. The cure is a surge arrester (also called a surge protection device — SPD, or lightning arrester for the heavy-duty rooftop versions). The trick is picking the right Type for your install.

This guide covers surge arrester and lightning arrester prices in Pakistan for 2026, the Type I / II / III distinction, where to install each, and the cost-benefit of a complete protective install vs going without.

1. Three types — what each does

Type Where Discharge current Why
Type I (Class B, lightning arrester) Main building entry 50–100 kA (10/350 µs) Direct lightning strike survival
Type II (Class C, surge arrester) DB-box upstream of MCBs 20–40 kA (8/20 µs) Induced surge from nearby strikes + switching
Type III (Class D, point-of-use) At sensitive electronics 10–20 kA (8/20 µs) Final clean-up of residual surge

For a typical Pakistani residential install, Type II at the DB box is the minimum. Add Type I if your building has rooftop solar (NEPRA 2026 effectively mandates this), and Type III at servers, NVR boxes, or expensive home theatre.

3. Where each goes in a Pakistani install

Type I (lightning arrester) at main panel entry

Required when the building has a lightning rod system on the roof. The Type I diverts the rod's strike current into the earth electrode, preventing it from reaching downstream equipment. Wired between line and earth.

Type II at DB box upstream of MCB row

The workhorse. Catches the residual surge that Type I (or nearby strike induction) lets through. One Type II at the main DB box protects everything downstream.

Type III at sensitive equipment

NVR / CCTV server, computers, expensive home theatre, hospital equipment. Optional but recommended for high-value loads.

DC Type II at solar PV string input

NEPRA 2026 requires DC SPD on every solar string. Wire between PV+ and PV-, plus a ground bonding wire to the building earth.

4. Designing a complete protective install for a Pakistani home

Typical 3-bed house with grid-tied solar:

  1. Rooftop: 1× lightning rod + 25 m down-conductor cable + 1× earth kit (PKR 4,500 + 25 × 850 + 12,500 = PKR 38,250)
  2. Main DB box: 1× Type II 1-phase (or 3-phase if applicable) (PKR 2,500–8,800)
  3. PV array side: 1× DC Type II at the combiner box (PKR 3,800–5,500)
  4. Inverter AC output: 1× Type II at sub-board (PKR 2,500)
  5. Point-of-use at NVR + main TV: 2× Type III (PKR 2,800)

Total: PKR 50,000–65,000 for full protection. Compare to: PKR 600,000+ to replace one inverter, plus AC, plus fridge, plus everything else when one strike fries the lot.

5. Installation

  1. Power off at the main isolator. Verify zero voltage at the install point.
  2. Mount the SPD on DIN rail in the DB box, upstream of the MCB row.
  3. Wire L1 (and L2, L3 if 3-phase) plus N from the supply to the SPD's L (and N) terminals.
  4. Wire the SPD's earth terminal to the DB-box ground bus. Keep this wire as short as possible (every centimetre of length increases inductance and lets surge bypass the SPD).
  5. Install a backup fuse (typically gG class) upstream of the SPD per IEC 60364-5-53.
  6. Restore power. The SPD's status indicator (green LED) should illuminate. After a major surge, indicator turns red — replace the cartridge.

6. FAQ

What's the cheapest surge arrester in Pakistan 2026?

CNC YCS6-T2-1P at PKR 2,500 — Type II, 20 kA, single-phase 275 V, DIN-rail. Standard for residential DB-box installation.

Do I need a Type I if I have solar?

If your building has a lightning rod on the roof: yes. If not (small residential without rod): Type II is enough. NEPRA 2026 doesn't explicitly require Type I but does require DC Type II on every solar string.

Surge arrester vs lightning arrester — same thing?

In casual Pakistani usage they overlap. Strictly: lightning arrester = Type I (handles direct strike, 50–100 kA, 10/350 µs waveform). Surge arrester = Type II or III (handles induced surge or switching transient, 8/20 µs waveform).

How often does the SPD need replacing?

The cartridge survives 5–10 major events before degrading. Check the status indicator monthly — red means replace. Body lasts decades; only the metal-oxide cartridge wears.

Can I install Type II SPD on a DC solar string?

Only if it's a DC-rated Type II (YCS6-DC series). AC-rated SPDs will fail under DC arc conditions. Always match polarity if the model is PV (vs PVn).
