Which EV Charger for Your Car?
| Car Model | Recommended Charger | Time 20→80% |
|---|---|---|
| BYD Atto 3 (60.5 kWh) | 7 kW three-phase | ~5.2 hours |
| MG 4 EV (51 kWh) | 7 kW single or 3-phase | ~4.4 hours |
| Deepal S07 (66 kWh) | 11 kW three-phase | ~3.6 hours |
| HAVAL H6 PHEV | 3.5 kW single-phase | ~3 hours (small battery) |
| Audi e-tron / BMW iX | 22 kW three-phase | ~2.5 hours |
Installation Requirements
- Dedicated breaker: 7 kW single-phase needs 40A MCB; 11 kW three-phase needs 20A 3P MCB; 22 kW three-phase needs 40A 3P MCB. Curve C recommended for inrush tolerance.
- RCBO mandatory: EV charging circuits must have a 30 mA Type B RCD (or RCBO with Type B characteristic) — IEC 61851-1 §8.5. Type A is not sufficient because EV power electronics can leak DC fault current.
- Cable size: 7 kW = 6mm² × 4 metres; 11 kW = 6mm² × 4 metres; 22 kW = 10mm² × 4 metres. Use copper, derate for ambient + bundling per IEC 60364-5-52.
- Earth electrode: Verified < 10 Ω TT earth, or main equipotential bonding for TN-S. Touch voltage protection is non-negotiable.
- Grid notification: WAPDA does NOT yet require notification for < 22 kW home chargers as of 2026, but K-Electric Karachi requires load-increase application for > 7 kW additions.

EV Chargers — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price of an EV charger in Pakistan?
CNC EV chargers: 3.5kW Type 2 from Rs.65,000; 7kW single-phase Rs.110,000-135,000; 7kW three-phase smart wallbox Rs.165,000-195,000; 11kW three-phase Rs.195,000-240,000; 22kW commercial Rs.285,000-380,000.
Can I install an EV charger at home?
Yes. Up to 22kW you can install at home in Pakistan — only requirement is a dedicated MCB + Type B 30mA RCBO and 6-10mm² copper cable to your DB. WAPDA does not require permission below 22kW.
Does my car use Type 2 connector?
Almost all EVs sold in Pakistan after 2022 use Type 2 (IEC 62196): BYD Atto 3, MG 4, Deepal S07, HAVAL EVs, Audi e-tron, BMW iX, Mercedes EQ series. Older Nissan Leaf uses Type 1.
How long to charge a typical EV?
A 60kWh battery from 20% to 80%: 3.5kW = 10 hours; 7kW = 5 hours; 11kW = 3.5 hours; 22kW = 2 hours. Most home users charge overnight at 7kW which is more than sufficient.
Do I need a Type B RCD?
Yes — IEC 61851-1 §8.5 requires Type B 30mA RCD on EV charging circuits because EV power electronics can leak DC residual current that a Type A RCD cannot detect.
