RCBO Price in Pakistan 2026 — Type AC, A, B Residual Breaker Buyer Guide

by CNC Electric Pakistan 04 Jun 2026

An RCBO is what you install when you want a single DIN-rail device to do the work of an MCB + RCCB together — overcurrent protection AND earth-leakage protection in one body. Pakistani electrical code is moving in this direction for new builds: every consumer-unit circuit gets its own RCBO instead of one shared RCCB feeding multiple MCBs. The benefit is selectivity — a leakage on the geyser doesn't trip the lights — but the cost is real.

This guide breaks down RCBO prices in Pakistan for 2026, when to pick RCBO over RCCB+MCB, sizing for Pakistani loads, and the Type AC vs Type A vs Type B distinction that matters specifically for solar prosumers under the 2026 NEPRA rules.

1. What is an RCBO?

RCBO = Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent. It's a 2-in-1 device that combines:

  • Overcurrent protection (MCB function): trips on overload or short-circuit, typically B or C curve, 6kA or 10kA breaking capacity
  • Earth-leakage protection (RCCB function): trips when imbalance between live and neutral exceeds the sensitivity rating, typically 30 mA for residential

You install one RCBO per circuit (geyser, AC, kitchen, lights, etc.) and each circuit is independently protected. A fault on the kitchen doesn't shut down the lights.

2. RCBO vs RCCB + MCB — which is right?

RCCB + MCB (separate) RCBO (combined)
DIN slots used (per circuit) 3 (1 RCCB serves multiple MCBs) 1 per circuit
Selectivity Low — one fault trips everything High — only affected circuit trips
Price for 5 circuits PKR ~6,000 PKR ~15,000
Diagnosis when tripped Have to inspect every load on RCCB branch Tripped breaker tells you which circuit
Best for Budget residential, simple consumer units Premium residential, solar prosumers, critical loads

For most existing Pakistani homes, the RCCB + MCBs setup is fine. New builds or solar prosumer installations under NEPRA 2026 increasingly specify RCBOs.

4. Type AC vs Type A vs Type B — the solar prosumer distinction

The "Type" letter refers to which kind of leakage current the RCBO can detect:

  • Type AC: detects sinusoidal AC leakage only. Standard residential, fine for traditional loads (lights, fans, geyser, refrigerator).
  • Type A: Type AC + pulsating DC leakage. Required for loads with electronics — modern washing machines, LED drivers, EV chargers.
  • Type B: Type A + smooth DC leakage. Required by NEPRA 2026 for solar prosumer installations because grid-tied inverters can leak smooth DC into the grid, which Type AC and Type A miss entirely.

The price premium is real: Type AC at PKR 3,800 vs Type B at PKR 11,500. But if you have grid-tied solar and want net-metering approval, the inspector will check for Type B. A Type AC RCBO on the solar feed will fail inspection.

5. How to size an RCBO for a Pakistani circuit

  1. List the loads on the circuit (kitchen, geyser, lights, AC, etc.) and total their wattage at 220 V.
  2. Divide by 220 V to get amps. Add 25% safety margin for inrush.
  3. Pick the next standard catalogue rating: 6, 10, 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50, 63 A.
  4. For sensitivity: 30 mA is residential standard. 10 mA is for life-safety (medical equipment). 100 or 300 mA is for fire protection on industrial feeders.
  5. For Type: Type AC for traditional residential, Type A for electronics-heavy circuits, Type B for solar-grid-tied feeds.

6. Installation in a Pakistani DB box

  1. Power off at the main isolator. Confirm with a tester — voltage should read zero on both line and neutral.
  2. Mount the RCBO on the DIN rail in your DB box.
  3. Wire the supply line to terminal 1 (or marked L IN) and neutral to terminal 2 (N IN).
  4. Wire the load line out from terminal 3 (L OUT) and load neutral from terminal 4 (N OUT).
  5. Each circuit gets one RCBO. The RCBO replaces both the RCCB+MCB pair that you'd otherwise have.
  6. Power on. Press the test button monthly — it should trip; reset by flipping the lever back up.

7. The monthly test you should actually do

RCBOs (like RCCBs) have a yellow or red test button. Pressing it simulates a fault and forces the device to trip. Every RCBO datasheet says "test monthly". 90% of Pakistani households never test.

Why you should: the trip mechanism can stick over months without movement. If you never test, the day a real fault happens (water leak into geyser, contact insulation failure), the RCBO may not trip and your family is exposed to mains voltage. Two seconds of pressing the test button per month prevents this.

8. FAQ

Is an RCBO better than RCCB + MCB?

Functionally similar, but RCBO offers selectivity — a fault on one circuit doesn't kill the others. Cost is roughly 2–3× more for the same number of circuits.

Do I need RCBO for my solar net-metering installation?

Under NEPRA 2026, the solar prosumer feed must use a Type B residual current device (RCCB or RCBO). A Type AC won't pass DISCO inspection.

What's the difference between 30 mA, 100 mA, and 300 mA RCBOs?

30 mA is the residential standard for shock protection. 100 mA is industrial sub-distribution. 300 mA is fire protection on main feeders. Higher mA means less sensitive to small leaks but still catches dangerous fault currents.

Can I retrofit an RCBO into an existing DB box?

Yes — the DIN rail and wiring footprint are standard. Remove the existing MCB on the circuit, install the RCBO in its slot, rewire from L+N. Total install time: 5 minutes per circuit by a competent electrician.

Are CNC RCBOs IEC certified?

Yes — CNC YCB10 series is tested to IEC 61009-1 (Type AC + Type A) and IEC 62423 (Type B). Carries PSQCA approval and 5-year warranty in Pakistan.
