Energy Meter Price in Pakistan 2026 — Digital, Smart, 3-Phase, Net-Metering Buyer Guide
The energy meter on the side of your DB box is doing two jobs you probably don't think about: it tells WAPDA how much to bill you, and it tells your inverter how much you produced. Every Pakistani household with grid-tied solar is feeding data to the WAPDA meter, the inverter, and increasingly to a third meter for net-metering. Get the right model and you'll get the buyback rate you paid for. Get the wrong one and you'll spend two months arguing with the DISCO about why your kWh exported reads different from theirs.
This guide covers energy meter prices in Pakistan for 2026 — single-phase, 3-phase, smart kWh meters with WiFi, DIN-rail digital meters for sub-metering, and the multi-function display models that are mandatory for the new NEPRA Prosumer Regulations. Skip to the price table if you know what you want.
1. Types of energy meters used in Pakistan
| Type | Use case | Pakistani context |
|---|---|---|
| Single-phase digital kWh meter | Sub-metering tenants, kits, small workshops | Most popular under PKR 5,000 |
| 3-phase digital kWh meter | 3-phase commercial loads, factories | PKR 7,500–15,000 |
| Multi-function 3-phase | Industrial — measures kW, kVAr, PF, harmonics | PKR 9,800–25,000 |
| Smart WiFi kWh meter | Per-circuit monitoring, app dashboard | Growing rapidly with home automation |
| Bi-directional meter | Net-metering for solar exports | Mandatory for NEPRA approval |
| Pre-paid meter | Tenant billing, low-trust rentals | Niche |

For DISCO-issued meters (the one WAPDA actually reads for billing), the household doesn't pay separately — the DISCO supplies and installs once your net-metering application is approved.
3. Single-phase vs 3-phase — which do you need?
Check your existing meter outside the house. If it has two connection terminals (one live + one neutral), you have a single-phase supply. If it has four terminals (R, Y, B + N), you have a 3-phase supply.
- Residential up to 5 kW load: single-phase usually fine
- 5–15 kW load: usually 3-phase
- Tubewell + central AC + EV charger combined: 3-phase
- Workshop, light commercial, industrial: 3-phase mandatory
If you mix it up and buy 3-phase for a single-phase supply, the meter physically won't connect to your DB.
4. Smart WiFi meters — when worth it?
A digital kWh meter (PKR 3,800) gives you a number on an LCD. A WiFi smart meter (PKR 5,400) gives you a number on your phone + history graphs + per-hour consumption.
Smart meter pays off if:
- You're sub-metering tenants and need to bill them remotely
- You have a solar system and want to verify the inverter's output reading independently
- You want to identify which appliance is the biggest consumer (smart meter shows hour-by-hour load profile)
- You want to set tariff alarms ("ping me when daily kWh exceeds 20")
Stay with the basic digital meter if:
- You only need the cumulative kWh for record-keeping
- You don't have reliable WiFi at the DB box (most meters need 2.4 GHz coverage there)
- Budget is tight and you're sub-metering 1–2 small loads
5. The bi-directional net-metering meter — what NEPRA requires
Under the 2025 NEPRA Prosumer Regulations, every grid-tied solar installation must use a bi-directional energy meter. This meter has two separate registers — one for energy imported from grid, one for energy exported back. The DISCO supplies this meter at no separate cost once your application is approved, but it must meet IEC 62053-21 (electromechanical) or IEC 62053-22 (electronic) accuracy class.
If you're applying for net-metering, you don't buy this meter — you wait for the DISCO. What you DO need is:
- A standard digital meter at the inverter output (for your own records) — PKR 3,800
- The bi-directional meter is installed by the DISCO during their inspection visit
- See our net-metering NEPRA guide for the full application process
6. How to install a DIN-rail energy meter in a Pakistani DB box
- Power off at the main isolator (this is the only step where a mistake will kill you).
- Mount the meter on the DIN rail in your DB box, upstream of the MCB row but downstream of the main switch.
- Wire line in to terminal 1 (or marked L IN), line out to terminal 2 (or L OUT), neutral in to N IN, neutral out to N OUT. The line passes through the meter's measurement coil.
- For 3-phase: same pattern across R, Y, B + N. All four wires must pass through.
- Power back on. The LCD should light up immediately. If it doesn't, check your phase rotation (3-phase) or line/neutral polarity.
- Reset the energy register if needed — most CNC YD meters have a hold-button to zero accumulated kWh.
7. Sub-metering tenants — the practical guide
Pakistani landlords increasingly install sub-meters to bill tenants accurately rather than splitting electricity bills by guesswork. The setup that works:
- One CNC YD-1P-DIN-W (WiFi) per tenant — PKR 5,400 each
- All meters report to a single landlord dashboard (Tuya Smart Life app)
- Read remotely at month-end, generate per-tenant invoice
- Tenant pays per kWh (at WAPDA rate or your agreed rate)
This is legal in Pakistan provided the tenants are notified in writing of the meter installation and the kWh rate. PEC and most DISCOs accept this arrangement.
8. CNC vs Schneider vs Chint — honest comparison
| CNC YD | Schneider iEM | Chint DDS | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-phase digital price | PKR 3,800 | PKR 12,500 | PKR 4,400 |
| 3-phase digital | PKR 7,500 | PKR 22,000 | PKR 8,900 |
| Multi-function | PKR 9,800 | PKR 35,000 | PKR 13,500 |
| Accuracy class | 1.0 / 0.5 | 0.5 / 0.2 | 1.0 / 0.5 |
| Modbus output | Yes (multi-fn) | Yes | Yes (multi-fn) |
| WiFi smart variant | Yes (Tuya) | Limited (proprietary) | No |
| Warranty Pakistan | 5 years | 2 years | 1 year |
For typical residential and light-commercial sub-metering in Pakistan, CNC offers Schneider-class accuracy at one-third the price. Schneider's 0.2-class meters do measurably outperform on harmonic-rich industrial loads but the 3× premium isn't justified unless your application requires MID-approval (European utility billing) — which Pakistan doesn't.
9. FAQ
What's the cheapest digital energy meter in Pakistan in 2026?
CNC YD-1P-DIN at PKR 3,800 from cncelectric.pk — single-phase, Class 1.0, DIN-rail mounted. 5-year warranty.
Do I need a separate meter for solar net-metering?
The DISCO installs a bi-directional meter during net-metering inspection. You optionally install your own digital meter at the inverter output for independent verification — PKR 3,800.
Can I use a 3-phase meter on a single-phase supply?
No — wire counts don't match. The meter expects three live phases plus neutral; a single-phase supply only provides one phase plus neutral.
How accurate are CNC energy meters?
The base digital range is Class 1.0 (within 1% of reading). The multi-function YD52-2066 is Class 0.5. Both meet IEC 62053-22 for residential billing accuracy.
Do the WiFi meters work without internet?
The meter itself works fine without internet — it still measures and accumulates kWh on the LCD. WiFi is only needed to push readings to the Tuya cloud / your phone. Same as any IoT device.
Are CNC energy meters PSQCA approved?
Yes — CNC YD-series carries PSQCA mark, meets IEC 62053 accuracy classes, and is accepted by Pakistani DISCOs for sub-metering installations.
