EP vs YCBZ — When to Use Each
CNC offers two main families of manual changeover:
- YCBZ series — lever-handle changeover with built-in breaker function. Snap-mount on DIN rail. Cheaper. Best for DB box install.
- EP series — rotary handle, separate from breaker function. Panel-mount or DIN-rail. More robust for frequent switching. Best for control panels, switchboards, where a clean rotary handle is preferred.
For most home backup installs (WAPDA ↔ generator) where switching happens 5-10 times a day, either works fine. EP wins when: (1) the switch is the primary user interface and aesthetic matters, (2) switching is very frequent (industrial), (3) higher current rating is needed than YCBZ goes to.
EP Position Configurations
2-Position (0-1 or I-II)
Simple on/off or source-1-or-source-2. Rotate 90° between positions. Used for: single source isolation, simple A/B selection.
3-Position (1-0-2)
Standard WAPDA / OFF / Generator pattern. Rotate 90° from centre OFF to either source. Mechanical interlock ensures the OFF position physically breaks before the other source can be selected — preventing momentary parallel connection.
4-Position (1-2-3-4)
Source selection between 4 sources. Used for: ammeter phase selection (R / Y / B / OFF), bus tie configurations, multi-source backup (WAPDA / generator 1 / generator 2 / solar).

Wiring an EP 1-0-2 Changeover (WAPDA / OFF / Gen)
- Source 1 (WAPDA) Live + Neutral (and Phases R Y B for 3-phase) → Source 1 input terminals (labelled 1L or 1U/V/W)
- Source 2 (Generator) Live + Neutral (and Phases) → Source 2 input terminals (labelled 2L or 2U/V/W)
- Load (house DB) → Common output terminals (labelled C or COMMON)
- Earths: WAPDA earth + generator earth + load earth all bonded at the main earth bar — NEVER switched through the changeover
Position 1: load connected to Source 1. Position 0: load disconnected from both sources (safe maintenance). Position 2: load connected to Source 2.
Common Wiring Mistakes
- Wiring source 1 and source 2 neutrals together upstream. Creates a permanent ground loop. Each source's neutral stays separate until the changeover output.
- Using a 2P changeover on a 3-phase circuit. Only switches 2 phases. The third stays connected. Use 4P for 3-phase + N.
- Forgetting the OFF middle position. Direct rotation from source 1 to source 2 (skipping OFF) creates a brief parallel connection. Quality EP changeovers have a positive OFF detent and break-before-make contacts.
- Undersizing on motor inrush. A 63 A EP feeding a 5 HP motor on startup sees 30 A inrush. The 63 A rating handles it, but a 32 A unit would weld. Match to FULL house load, not nominal.
- Mounting in a hot enclosure without ventilation. EP switches above 100 A dissipate noticeable heat under load. Ventilate the enclosure or oversize.

EP rotary or YCBZ lever — which is better?

Size to the house main breaker (which the changeover protects), not to the generator capacity. A 14 kW house typically has a 63 A main breaker, so use an EP-2P-63 (Rs.1,700) for single-phase or EP-4P-63 for 3-phase. The changeover handles the load current, not generator output.
Does the EP need its own MCB?
Yes — at minimum a 2P or 4P MCB / MCCB on each source feeding into the EP, plus typically one on the load output side. The EP is for SWITCHING, not for OVERCURRENT PROTECTION — that's the breaker's job.
