Updated: May 2026 · CNC Electric Pakistan

ATS — Pakistan Quick Answer (2026)

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) transfers your load from WAPDA to your backup generator (or back) automatically in 50–200 ms, with no manual intervention. Standard Pakistani installation: WAPDA + generator + 4 wires to ATS + load. Pakistan 2026 prices: 2P 63 A YCQR (single-phase home) from Rs.6,300; 2P 100 A YCQ4 from Rs.6,200; 4P 63 A YCQ1B (3-phase) from Rs.8,200; 4P 100 A YCQ4 from Rs.7,200; 4P 200-630 A YCS1 (commercial) Rs.18,500–89,000. Installation cost Rs.3,500–10,000 by a licensed electrician.

What an ATS Does, Step by Step

An ATS is an automatic switch that monitors two power sources continuously and transfers your load to whichever source is healthy. The standard Pakistani residential / commercial sequence:

  1. Steady state, WAPDA available: ATS connects the load to WAPDA. Generator is off. Status LEDs: GREEN on Source 1.
  2. WAPDA fails (voltage drops below safe threshold or disappears completely). ATS detects within 50 ms.
  3. Genset start signal sent. ATS closes its GEN START contact, sending 12 V or 24 V to the generator's auto-start input.
  4. Genset cranks and stabilises (typically 5–15 seconds for a small genset, 10–30 for larger).
  5. ATS confirms valid voltage on Source 2 (generator side).
  6. Transfer to Source 2: ATS mechanically opens the WAPDA-side contacts and closes the generator-side contacts. Brief gap of 50–200 ms.
  7. Load is now on generator. Steady state until WAPDA returns.
  8. WAPDA returns. ATS waits 30–60 seconds to confirm WAPDA is stable.
  9. Transfer back to Source 1: ATS opens generator contacts, closes WAPDA contacts. Load back on WAPDA.
  10. Cooldown timer starts (typically 3–5 minutes). Generator runs unloaded to cool down.
  11. GEN START contact opens: generator receives stop signal, shuts down.
  12. Steady state, WAPDA restored.

ATS Wiring — Single-Phase Pakistani Home Standard

For a typical 14 kW single-phase home with manual-start generator OR auto-start genset:

Connections (CNC YCQR 2P 63 A)

  • WAPDA Line in → ATS Source 1 L1 terminal
  • WAPDA Neutral in → ATS Source 1 N terminal
  • Generator Line in → ATS Source 2 L1 terminal
  • Generator Neutral in → ATS Source 2 N terminal
  • Load Line out → from ATS Common L terminal → to house DB box main MCB
  • Load Neutral out → from ATS Common N terminal → to house DB neutral busbar
  • Earths: all three (WAPDA earth, generator earth, house earth) bonded together at the main earth bar. Never switched.
  • GEN START: 2-wire control cable from ATS GEN START contact → to generator's auto-start input. Voltage depends on generator (12 V or 24 V DC typically).

For 3-phase install (CNC YCQ1B 4P 63 A)

Same logic, but 4 wires per source: R + Y + B + N → Source 1 RYBN; same on Source 2; Common RYBN → load. Phase sequence (R-Y-B order) MUST match between WAPDA and generator — reversed sequence spins motors backwards and damages drives. Verify at install with a phase sequence relay.

Critical: Never bond the two sources' neutrals upstream of the ATS. Each source keeps its own neutral until the ATS output. Bonding upstream creates a permanent ground loop and unpredictable fault behaviour. Standard practice: separate neutrals through the ATS, bonded only at the load-side earth bar via a single neutral-earth link in the main DB.

ATS Settings & Timing — What Each Knob Does

A typical ATS controller has several configurable timers. Standard Pakistani residential settings:

Timer Default What it does
Mains fail delay 3 sec Wait this long after WAPDA voltage drops before starting genset. Prevents needless genset cranks during 1-2 second WAPDA blips.
Genset start crank 10 sec Hold GEN START contact closed long enough for genset to crank and start. Adjust to your specific genset's start time.
Genset warm-up 5 sec Wait after genset is running before transferring load. Lets oil pressure and voltage stabilise.
Mains return delay 30 sec Wait this long after WAPDA returns before transferring back. Confirms WAPDA is stable, not a brief return.
Cooldown 3 min After transferring load back to WAPDA, run genset unloaded to cool down before stopping. Extends genset life.

Installation Cost — Pakistani Reality 2026

Total installed cost for a typical Pakistani home ATS installation:

Item Cost (PKR)
CNC YCQR 2P 63 A ATS Rs.6,300
ATS enclosure (NEMA / IP44 metal box) Rs.2,500
Power cable (4×16 mm² for 2P, 5 m run) Rs.4,500
Control cable for GEN START (2×1.5 mm² shielded) Rs.800
Cable lugs, terminals, conduit, glands Rs.1,500
Licensed electrician (4–6 hours) Rs.4,500–6,500
Total installed (single-phase residential) Rs.20,000–22,000
3-phase residential / small commercial (YCQ1B 4P 63 A) Rs.28,000–35,000
Commercial / factory (YCS1 4P 200 A) Rs.55,000–85,000

Common Wiring Mistakes

  • Wiring WAPDA and generator neutrals together UPSTREAM of the ATS. Creates a permanent ground loop. Each source's neutral stays separate until the ATS Common output.
  • Skipping the GEN START control cable. ATS waits forever for a generator that won't start. If your genset is manual-start (no auto-start input), use a manual changeover switch instead — the ATS adds no value without auto-start integration.
  • Mounting ATS on the generator side rather than at the main DB. The ATS should be physically at the DB box, fed by the two source cables. Mounting at the generator means the WAPDA cable is in parallel with the load — fault-protection chaos.
  • Using an undersized ATS (matching the generator size, not the load size). If your generator is 8 kVA but your main breaker is 63 A, the ATS must be 63 A — not 36 A (which would handle the genset's max output). Match ATS rating to the load main breaker, not the source size.
  • Skipping the cooldown period. Cutting the GEN START contact immediately when WAPDA returns kills the genset hot. Its life is halved. Always allow 3+ minutes of cooldown.
  • Setting transfer delays too short. A 1-second mains-fail delay means the ATS starts the genset every time WAPDA flickers for half a second. The genset cranks 50× a day, wears out in months. Standard 3-second delay is the minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of an ATS in Pakistan?

CNC ATS prices in Pakistan 2026: 2P 63 A YCQR from Rs.6,300; 2P 100 A YCQ4 Rs.6,200; 4P 63 A YCQ1B Rs.8,200; 4P 100 A YCQ4 Rs.7,200; commercial 4P 200-630 A YCS1 Rs.18,500-89,000. Installation typically Rs.4,500-10,000 extra.

How does an ATS know when to switch?

The ATS continuously samples voltage on both sources. When WAPDA drops below threshold (typically 180 V on single-phase or full disappearance), it waits the mains-fail delay (default 3 seconds), then closes its GEN START contact to crank the generator. Once generator voltage is healthy, it transfers the load.

Can an ATS work with a manual-start generator?

It can SWITCH between sources automatically, but it can't START a manual generator. Without auto-start integration, you'd need to manually start the genset every time WAPDA fails, then wait for the ATS to detect and transfer. In that case, a much cheaper manual changeover switch (Rs.1,100) is just as good.

What size ATS do I need?

Match the ATS amp rating to your main WAPDA breaker, NOT to your generator size. A 63 A main = 63 A ATS. A 100 A main = 100 A ATS. The ATS handles whatever current the load actually draws, not what the generator can produce.

Does the ATS need its own breaker?

Yes — at minimum a 2P or 4P MCB / MCCB on each source feeding into the ATS. This isolates the ATS for maintenance and protects against faults. Size the breaker to match the ATS rating (e.g. 63 A MCB upstream of a 63 A ATS).

How long does an ATS last?

Mechanical life of a CNC ATS is 3,000–15,000 transfer operations depending on model. Typical Pakistani load-shedding pattern of 5-10 outages per day translates to 5–15 years of service. The solid-state controller usually outlasts the mechanical switching contacts. CNC ATS units carry a 5-year warranty.

Can the ATS handle solar inverter as Source 2?

Yes — many Pakistani hybrid solar systems use ATS to switch between WAPDA and solar inverter output. The control is the same: ATS monitors WAPDA, on failure transfers to inverter output. For pure DC switching between solar and battery, use the DC version (CNC YCQ4 DC 2P 500V) instead of an AC ATS.
