Changeover Switch Pakistan 2026 — Manual vs Auto vs ATS Complete Selection Guide

Updated: May 2026 · CNC Electric Pakistan

Changeover Switch — Pakistan Quick Answer (2026)

A changeover switch transfers your electrical load between two power sources — typically WAPDA mains and a backup generator or solar inverter — preventing dangerous backfeed. Pakistan 2026 prices: manual DIN-rail 2P 63 A from Rs.1,100, rotary EP series 4P from Rs.2,800, automatic ATS 2P 63 A from Rs.6,200, 4P 100 A ATS from Rs.7,200, and 4P 200–630 A commercial ATS from Rs.18,500.

Why a Changeover Switch Is Non-Negotiable in Pakistan

Pakistani homes and businesses commonly use two power sources — WAPDA / K-Electric mains plus a backup generator, UPS, or solar inverter. Without a changeover switch you have two serious risks:

  • Back-feed to the WAPDA line. If your generator is running and WAPDA suddenly returns, both sources energise the line simultaneously. You can shock or kill the lineman working on the pole. WAPDA penalises this offence heavily.
  • Damage to your generator or inverter. Two sources connected together fight each other — destroying the smaller one (usually the inverter or genset).

A changeover switch is the simple, cheap fix: a single multi-position switch ensures that at most one source is connected at any time. Manual versions require you to flip a handle. Automatic versions (ATS) do it in milliseconds with no human intervention.

Generator auto-start No Yes (gen-start contact)
Best for Small home, manual genset, low budget Unattended sites, server room, hospital, IT
User action required Walk to DB, flip handle None
Risk during sleep / absence Lights off until you return Lights stay on automatically

CNC Changeover Range — Pakistan 2026 Models

Manual DIN-Rail Changeovers (YCBZ Series)

Compact DIN-rail manual changeover. Mechanical interlock prevents both sources connecting simultaneously. Snap fits into any standard DB box.

  • YCBZ 2P 63 A — single-phase, ~14 kW load. Rs.1,100. Most popular for home + small genset.
  • YCBZ 3P 63 A — three-phase mid-size. Rs.1,500.
  • YCBZ 4P 63 A — three-phase + neutral. Rs.2,450. Standard for 3-phase homes.
  • YCBZ 4P 100 A / 125 A — heavier loads. Rs.3,500–5,500.

EP Series Rotary Changeovers

Industrial-grade rotary changeover. Hand-rotate the knob through positions 0-1-2 or 1-0-2 to select source. Panel mount or DIN rail. Higher build quality than the YCBZ for frequent switching duty.

  • EP 2P 63 ARs.1,700
  • EP 3P 100 ARs.4,200
  • EP 4P 100 ARs.5,500
  • EP 4P 250 A — commercial panels. Rs.8,500

Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)

The fully-automatic option. Voltage sensors continuously monitor WAPDA. On loss, the ATS waits 3-10 seconds (genset start-up time), then closes to generator side. On WAPDA return, waits a programmed delay, then transfers back and signals genset cooldown.

  • YCQR 2P 63 A — single-phase home backup. Rs.6,300.
  • YCQ4 2P 100 A — larger single-phase. Rs.6,200.
  • YCQ1B 4P 63 A — three-phase mid-size. Rs.8,200.
  • YCQ4 4P 100 A — three-phase factories. Rs.7,200.
  • YCS1 4P 200–630 A — commercial / hospital / data centre. Rs.18,500–89,000.
  • YCQ4 DC 2P 500 V 100 A — solar DC-side auto transfer. Rs.7,300.

Sizing Your Changeover or ATS

  1. Match the changeover amp rating to your main breaker. Not to your generator size — the changeover sits in series with your house load, so it must handle your full house current.
  2. For 3-phase, choose 4-pole (4P) — switches neutral too. 3-pole skips neutral, which can cause earth-leakage issues during transfer.
  3. For automatic, oversize 30% if you run motors or large inductive loads. Inrush during transfer is brutal on switching contacts.
  4. For solar hybrid systems with battery backup, use a DC-side ATS like YCQ4 DC 2P 500 V — switches between solar and battery without going through AC.

Wiring a Manual Changeover — Single-Phase Home Pattern

Standard 3-position handle: position 1 = WAPDA, position 0 = OFF, position 2 = Generator.

  1. WAPDA Live + Neutral → Source 1 input terminals
  2. Generator Live + Neutral → Source 2 input terminals
  3. Load (house DB) → Common output terminals
  4. All earths bond together at the main earth bar (never switched)
Critical for 3-phase: phase sequence must match. When switching between WAPDA 3-phase and generator 3-phase, the phase sequence (R-Y-B order) MUST match. Reversed sequence will spin motors backwards. Use a phase sequence relay to verify at install.

ATS Auto-Start Wiring (Generator Integration)

Modern auto-start gensets accept a 12 V or 24 V trigger signal from the ATS. CNC YCQR and YCS1 ATS units provide a Form C contact labelled GEN START. Wire it to the generator's auto-start input:

  1. WAPDA fails → ATS waits 3 seconds (debounces transient outages) → closes GEN START contact
  2. Generator starts and stabilises (10-30 seconds depending on type) → ATS detects valid voltage on source 2 → transfers load
  3. WAPDA returns → ATS waits 30-60 seconds (confirms stable WAPDA) → transfers load back → cooldown timer (3-5 min) keeps generator running unloaded → opens GEN START contact → generator shuts off

Common Installation Mistakes

  • Wiring generator and WAPDA neutrals together upstream of the changeover. This creates a permanent ground loop. Each source keeps its own neutral until the changeover output.
  • Using a 2-pole changeover on a 3-phase system. Switches only one phase — leaves the other two connected to both sources.
  • Skipping the genset start contact wiring. Manual-start generator on an ATS = ATS waits forever for a source that won't come. Wire the auto-start.
  • Putting the changeover AFTER the branch breakers instead of BEFORE. Only some circuits get backed up. Always wire at the main feeder.
  • Using a 63 A changeover when WAPDA is 100 A. Contact welding within months. Match or exceed the main breaker rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of a changeover switch in Pakistan?

Manual DIN-rail changeovers in Pakistan start from Rs.550 (CNC YCBZ 1P 63 A). 4-pole 63 A models are Rs.2,450. Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) start from Rs.6,200 for the 2P 100 A YCQ4. Commercial 4P 200–630 A ATS units range Rs.18,500–89,000.

What is the difference between a changeover switch and an ATS?

A changeover switch requires you to manually flip a handle to switch sources (Rs.550–8,500). An ATS does it automatically in 50–200 ms when WAPDA fails (Rs.6,200–89,000). For unattended sites, server rooms, hospitals — the ATS is required. For homes with manual-start generators, the cheaper changeover is sufficient.

Can an ATS auto-start my generator?

Yes — when wired correctly. CNC YCQR and YCS1 ATS units provide a Form C contact labelled GEN START. Wire it to your generator's auto-start input. When WAPDA fails the contact closes, signalling start. When WAPDA returns and stabilises, the contact opens, signalling cooldown and stop.

What size ATS do I need for my home?

Match the ATS rating to your main WAPDA breaker, not to your generator. For most single-phase Pakistani homes (8–14 kW load), use 2P 63 A (CNC YCQR at Rs.6,300). For larger homes or 3-phase, use 4P 63 A (YCQ1B at Rs.8,200). For factory or commercial, step up to YCS1 4P 200–630 A.

Do I need a 4-pole changeover for 3-phase?

Yes. A 4-pole switch transfers all three phases AND the neutral. Skipping neutral on a 3-phase changeover creates earth-leakage and phase-imbalance issues during transfer. Always use 4P for 3-phase systems.

How long does an ATS last?

Mechanical life: 3,000–15,000 transfer events. For typical Pakistani use (5–10 outages per day during load-shedding), that's 5–15 years of service. The solid-state controller typically outlasts the mechanical contacts. CNC ATS units ship with a 5-year warranty.

Will a changeover protect me from backfeed?

Yes — the mechanical interlock inside any quality changeover (YCBZ, EP series, ATS) physically prevents both sources connecting at the same time. This stops the dangerous backfeed to the WAPDA line that endangers utility workers.
