What "Way" Means on a DB Box

"Way" refers to the number of module slots on the DIN rail inside the box. One module = 18 mm width = one 1P MCB. A "12-way" DB box has 12 module slots, which fits:

• 12 × single-pole MCBs (1 module each), OR
• 6 × 2-pole MCBs (2 modules each), OR
• 3 × 4-pole RCCBs (4 modules each), OR
• Any combination that adds to 12 modules

Standard CNC DB box sizes in Pakistan: 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, 24, 36, 54 way. For a typical residential install, 12-way to 18-way covers most needs. Industrial / 3-phase installs go to 24, 36, or 54 way.

How to Size Your DB Box — Step by Step

Step 1: list every protection device you want inside

For a typical Pakistani single-phase home (14 kW load):

• Main MCB 2P 63 A → 2 modules
• Voltage protector YC7VA 63 A → 2 modules
• SPD YCS6-C 1P+N → 2 modules
• Whole-house RCCB 2P 100 mA → 2 modules
• Lighting MCBs 1P 10 A × 3 → 3 modules
• Socket MCBs 1P 16 A × 4 → 4 modules
• Bathroom RCBO 1P+N 16 A 30 mA → 2 modules
• Kitchen RCBO 1P+N 16 A 30 mA → 2 modules
• Geyser RCBO 1P+N 16 A 30 mA → 2 modules
• AC dedicated 1P 25 A × 2 → 2 modules
• Pump 1P 16 A → 1 module

Total: 24 modules. Add a 20% buffer for future expansion → 30 modules. Pick the next standard size: 36-way DB box (or two 18-way side by side).

Step 2: pick the IP rating for your install location

• Indoor dry residential: IP20 / IP30 plastic DB is fine (Rs.1,050–4,200)
• Indoor light commercial / shop: IP44 plastic with door (Rs.1,800–5,800)
• Indoor industrial / dusty: IP54 metal body (Rs.4,500–9,500)
• Outdoor sheltered: IP55 sealed metal (Rs.6,800–14,000)
• Outdoor exposed / monsoon: IP65 sealed metal with viewing window (Rs.9,500–18,500)

Step 3: choose plastic vs metal body

• Plastic (ABS / PC) — light, cheaper, non-conductive (no earth bond required on the body), aesthetically neutral. Right for residential, indoor.
• Metal (cold-rolled steel powder-coated) — sturdier, higher IP ratings possible, requires earth bonding to the body. Right for industrial, outdoor, or anywhere physical impact is a risk.

Wiring a DB Box — Pakistani Single-Phase Standard

Layout from top of the DB box (where the supply enters) downward:

1. Cable gland / entry at top — WAPDA service cable enters through a 25 mm gland
2. Main MCB 2P 63 A — top of DIN rail, fed by the WAPDA line + neutral
3. Voltage protector immediately downstream of main MCB
4. SPD tapped between live and neutral immediately downstream of protector
5. Whole-house RCCB 2P 100 mA downstream of SPD
6. Branch MCBs and RCBOs on the DIN rail below, each tapped from the live and neutral busbars
7. Earth bar at the bottom — separate copper bar bonded to the metal DB body (if metal) and to the building earth electrode. All circuit earths terminate here.

Common Mistakes

• Buying a DB box with too few ways and stuffing devices. Then there's no room for future circuits (solar, EV charger, additional AC). Always size 20-30% bigger than your initial install needs.
• Mounting the DB at floor level. Should be 1.5-1.8 m above the floor for easy operation and out of children's reach. Pakistani electrical code recommends 1.7 m for residential.
• Using a plastic DB outdoors. UV degrades the plastic; rain gets through degraded gaskets. Outdoor needs metal body IP55 minimum.
• Skipping the earth bar bonding (metal DB). The metal body needs its own earth connection — usually via a copper braid from the DB chassis to the main earth bar.
• Stuffing the DB with cables that don't fit. Each MCB needs 4-6 mm² minimum for branch circuits; the main needs 16 mm² for a 63 A supply. Use a bigger DB box rather than crushing cables.
• Putting the DB in a damp / kitchen / bathroom location. Move it to a dry hallway, store room, or outside the wet zone. RCCB in the wet zone is fine; the DB itself shouldn't be.
