What is the difference between ELCB and RCCB?

ELCB is the older voltage-operated variant from before the 1980s that detects voltage on the earth wire. RCCB is the modern current-operated device that detects current imbalance between live and neutral, complying with IEC 61008-1. Use RCCB or RCBO in any new installation.

Is 30 mA or 100 mA better for home use?

30 mA is the life-safety threshold for sockets, kitchens, and bathrooms. 100 mA is used for selectivity at main-incoming or for water-heater circuits where 30 mA would nuisance-trip. Pakistani homes should use 30 mA on all socket circuits and 100 mA at the main incoming.

What is the trip time of an RCBO in Pakistan?

Can I replace an MCB with an RCBO directly?

Yes, an RCBO is a 1-for-1 DIN-rail replacement for an MCB and adds earth-leakage protection. Width is the same (18 mm for 1P+N) and amperage rating must match the original MCB. Confirm the neutral wire is brought into the device terminal.

What is an ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker)?

An ELCB is a protective device that interrupts a circuit when it detects an earth-leakage current — the imbalance between live and neutral currents caused by a person or appliance contacting earth. Modern ELCB-functional protection in Pakistan is provided by current-operated RCCBs (IEC 61008-1) and RCBOs (IEC 61009-1), which detect 30 mA leakage in under 40 ms — fast enough to prevent ventricular fibrillation. Legacy voltage-operated ELCBs (1960s–80s) are no longer recommended because they cannot detect leakage to a separately-grounded surface.
