Tubewell Pump Control Panel Price in Pakistan 2026 — DOL, Star-Delta & Auto-Start Buyer Guide

A tubewell motor is one of the most expensive single pieces of equipment on a Pakistani farm or in a residential boring — and the cheapest way to destroy it is to run it on a bad control panel. Single-phasing on the WAPDA feeder, a 360V brown-out, or ten minutes of dry running will burn a Rs 80,000 submersible motor while you are not watching. The control panel is the device that stands between your motor and all three of those failure modes. This guide covers tubewell pump control panel prices in Pakistan in 2026, how to choose between DOL, star-delta and VFD starting, the protections every panel must have, and how to size the contactor and breaker correctly.

Quick price summary (2026, PKR)

Panel type Motor range Typical price (PKR) Best for
Basic DOL starter 1–7.5 HP Rs 8,000 – 18,000 Small residential boring, single-phase or small 3-phase
DOL with full protection 3–10 HP Rs 18,000 – 35,000 Residential / small agri tubewell
Star-delta starter 10–50 HP Rs 25,000 – 80,000 Agricultural tubewells, reduces inrush
Auto-start panel (timer + protections) 10–50 HP Rs 35,000 – 1,20,000 Unattended / scheduled irrigation
VFD / soft-start panel 15 HP+ Rs 90,000 – 4,50,000 Voltage-sensitive sites, solar-ready, smooth control

Prices include locally assembled steel enclosure, contactors, overload relay and basic protection relays. They vary with component tier — see our electrical equipment tier guide for what the price difference actually buys you.

1. Starting method: DOL vs star-delta vs VFD

The single biggest decision is how the motor is started, because that determines inrush current, voltage dip on your line, and mechanical stress on the pump.

Method Starting current Motor size Notes
Direct-on-line (DOL) 6–8 × FLC ≤ 7.5 HP Cheapest, simplest; heavy inrush unacceptable on larger motors
Star-delta ~2–3 × FLC 10–50 HP Starts in star, runs in delta; needs 6-lead motor
Soft starter 2–4 × FLC (ramped) 15 HP+ Smooth ramp, less mechanical shock
VFD 1–1.5 × FLC Any (cost-driven) Full speed control, solar-ready, lowest inrush

Sizing rule of thumb: for a 3-phase 400V motor, full-load current (FLC) ≈ HP × 1.5 A. A 10 HP motor draws ≈ 15 A; on DOL that is a 90–120 A inrush that will dim every light on the feeder. That is why 10 HP is the practical line where you move to star-delta.

2. The four protections every Pakistani tubewell panel needs

  1. Single-phasing preventer. WAPDA/DISCO rural feeders routinely lose a phase. A 3-phase motor running on two phases overheats and burns within minutes. This is the number-one motor killer in Pakistan — never buy a panel without it.
  2. Overload relay (thermal or electronic), set to motor FLC. Protects against mechanical jam, bearing seizure and sustained overcurrent. Built to IEC 60947-4-1.
  3. Dry-run / no-load protection. When the water table drops below the pump, the motor runs dry and overheats. A current-sensing dry-run relay or a probe stops it automatically.
  4. Over / under-voltage protection. Rural lines swing 360–440V. A voltage-monitoring relay disconnects outside a safe band and reconnects after a delay. See our voltage protector range for the relay types.

Add a phase-sequence relay (prevents reverse rotation after a line repair) and an auto-start timer for unattended irrigation, and you have a panel that protects the asset instead of just switching it.

3. Component sizing — contactor, overload and breaker

For each tubewell motor:

  • Contactor: choose the next AC-3 rating above FLC. For star-delta, the main and delta contactors carry 58% of line current, so they can be one frame smaller — a common cost saving.
  • Overload relay: set exactly to nameplate FLC, not the contactor rating.
  • Short-circuit protection: an MPCB or MCCB rated ≈ 1.25 × FLC, with a breaking capacity above your site's prospective short-circuit current.
  • Power factor: large tubewell motors run at poor power factor; on agricultural connections with a PF surcharge a small capacitor pays back quickly — see the power factor capacitor bank guide.

4. Pakistan-specific buying notes

  • WAPDA 3-phase supply quality: assume single-phasing and brown-outs are normal, not exceptional. Protection relays are not optional here.
  • Enclosure for the field: outdoor agri tubewells need IP55–IP65 with a sun shade; indoor pump rooms can use IP42–IP54.
  • Solar readiness: if you plan to convert to solar later, fit an AC changeover switch now so you can switch between WAPDA and a future solar pump inverter without rewiring.
  • Earthing: a proper earth electrode at the tubewell is mandatory — most "motor gives shock" complaints are missing or dried-out earthing.
  • Backup power: tubewells paired with hybrid solar increasingly run off the inverter; see the hybrid inverter guide for sizing the system around a motor's surge.

5. Five expensive mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying a panel without a single-phasing preventer to save Rs 2,000 — then paying Rs 60,000 for a rewind.
  2. Using DOL on a 15+ HP motor, tripping the whole feeder and stressing the windings on every start.
  3. Setting the overload relay to the contactor rating instead of motor FLC, so it never trips when it should.
  4. Fitting an indoor-rated enclosure outdoors; dust and rain cause tracking faults within a season.
  5. Skipping dry-run protection on a falling water table — the most common burn-out in South Punjab and Sindh.

6. Pre-purchase checklist

  • ☐ Motor HP, FLC and number of leads (3-lead = DOL only; 6-lead = star-delta capable) confirmed from nameplate
  • ☐ Starting method matched to motor size (DOL ≤ 7.5 HP, star-delta 10–50 HP, VFD/soft-start above)
  • ☐ Single-phasing preventer fitted
  • ☐ Overload relay set to FLC
  • ☐ Dry-run protection fitted
  • ☐ Over/under-voltage relay fitted
  • ☐ Contactor AC-3 rating > FLC; breaker ≈ 1.25 × FLC
  • ☐ Enclosure IP rating matched to indoor/outdoor
  • ☐ Earth electrode installed and tested
  • ☐ Changeover fitted if solar conversion is planned
  • ☐ Components built to IEC 61439 / 60947 standards
