EV Charging Time & Cost in Pakistan (2026): How Long & How Much to Charge at Home

Two questions decide whether an electric car fits your life in Pakistan: how long does it take to charge at home, and what does a charge actually cost? Both have simple, honest answers once you strip away the marketing — and in a country with cheap daytime solar and expensive petrol, the numbers are firmly on the EV's side if you charge it the smart way. Here is the plain arithmetic for 2026, with real charger ratings and realistic running costs.

1. The only formula you need

Ignore the jargon. Home AC charging time comes down to one line:

Hours to charge ≈ Battery capacity (kWh) ÷ Charger power (kW) × 1.1

The 1.1 accounts for the ~10% lost as heat in the cable, charger and the car's on-board converter. So a 40 kWh battery on a 7 kW charger is roughly 40 ÷ 7 × 1.1 ≈ 6.3 hours from empty. In practice you rarely charge from 0%, so real top-ups are shorter.

2. Home charging times at a glance

Times below are for a full 0–100% charge on a home AC charger. Find your battery size (usually on the spec sheet) and read across:

The pattern is clear: even the slowest home charger comfortably fills a car during a night's parking, which is exactly how EVs are meant to be charged — plug in when you get home, unplug in the morning.

3. Home AC vs public DC — what you can actually install

There are two families of charging. AC charging is what you fit at home: the car's own converter turns AC into DC for the battery, capped by that converter to typically 7–22 kW. DC fast charging (50 kW and up) lives at public stations, where the charger does the conversion and pushes power straight into the battery for a 20-minute splash-and-dash on a long trip.

For the home, an AC charger is the right and affordable choice. CNC's home units use the standard Type 2 connector and come in two ratings:

  • 3.5 kW single-phase — suits any home with a normal single-phase supply.
  • 7 kW three-phase — for homes with a three-phase connection that want a faster fill.

4. What a full charge costs

Cost is just energy used × your electricity rate:

Cost per charge ≈ Battery kWh × per-unit tariff

Pakistani residential tariffs vary a lot by slab and, on time-of-use meters, by hour — call it roughly Rs.35–65 per unit for most homes. On that basis:

Put against petrol, the gap is stark. At ~6 km/kWh and Rs.50/unit, an EV costs about Rs.8 per km; a petrol car returning 12 km/litre at pump prices is closer to Rs.25–35 per km. Over a year of city driving, that difference pays for a lot of the car.

5. Cut it further: off-peak and solar

Two levers push the running cost toward zero:

  • Charge off-peak. If you're on a time-of-use meter, charging overnight uses the cheapest units of the day — and it's when the car is parked anyway.
  • Charge from your own solar. This is the big one. Under NEPRA's 2026 net-billing rules, exported solar earns only a low buyback rate — so the smart move is to self-consume it. Charging the car during the day turns midday solar you'd otherwise export cheaply into free kilometres. A daytime charge from a well-sized array is about as close to free motoring as it gets.

6. Know your real numbers — measure it

Estimates are fine, but the exact cost of every charge is easy to track. A WiFi energy meter on the charger circuit logs precisely how many units each session draws, so you can see your true cost per charge and per km rather than guessing.
