Do You Need a Special Meter or Connection to Charge an EV at Home in Pakistan? (2026)
Before buying a home EV charger, most people in Pakistan ask the same worried question: do I need a special connection, a separate meter, or a three-phase supply first? The good news is that for normal home charging the answer is usually no — you charge on the connection you already have. But there are three real things to check first: whether your sanctioned load can spare the power, whether you need three-phase, and how you want the charging metered. Here is exactly what you need, and what you don't.

1. Short answer: charge on the supply you already have
A home EV charger is a fixed appliance, like an AC or a water heater. For standard AC charging you do not need a new electricity connection, a dedicated "EV meter", or a special tariff — the energy simply adds to your normal monthly bill. 2. The real question: can your sanctioned load spare it?
Every connection in Pakistan has a sanctioned load — the maximum your DISCO has approved for your premises. A charger is a heavy, sustained draw, so the test is simple: does your sanctioned load have room for the charger on top of everything else that runs at the same time?
A 3.5 kW charger draws about 16 A; a 7 kW unit far more. If your home already runs two or three air-conditioners, a pump and a geyser in the evening, adding a big charger to that peak can push you over your sanctioned load and trip the main breaker. Two easy fixes:
- Charge overnight, when the ACs and other heavy loads are off and you have plenty of headroom.
- Pick a charger that fits your headroom — a 3.5 kW unit is enough for most homes and is far gentler on a constrained supply.
Only if you genuinely need sustained high-power charging on top of a heavy household load would you consider applying to your DISCO to enhance your sanctioned load — for most homes that's unnecessary.
3. Do you need three-phase?
This is the one hardware limit that can force a change. Home chargers split cleanly by supply:

4. Do you need a special meter?
No special EV meter is required. Charging is billed through your existing meter like any other load. That said, two metering choices can help you:
- Time-of-use (ToU) meter. If your meter supports it, off-peak (overnight) units are cheaper — and overnight is exactly when you'd charge. This lowers your charging cost without any special EV arrangement.
- Net-metering / net-billing meter. If you have solar, your bidirectional meter already records import and export. Under NEPRA's 2026 net-billing rules, exported solar earns only a low rate, so the smart play is to charge the car from your daytime solar rather than export it cheaply.
5. Optional but useful: a sub-meter to track cost
Because charging shows up as one lump on your DISCO bill, many EV owners add a small WiFi energy meter on the charger circuit. It logs exactly how many units each charging session uses, so you can see your true cost per charge and per kilometre — handy if you want to bill a tenant, track business mileage, or just prove the running-cost savings.
