Breaker Switch Pakistan — Complete 2026 Sizing & Selection Guide

Last verified: 2026-05-29 · Author: CNC Electric Pakistan Engineering Team · Reading time: 8 min

"Breaker switch" is the catch-all Pakistani term for any switch that automatically opens an electrical circuit when current goes above its rated limit. Underneath that single phrase sit at least seven distinct device families, and choosing the wrong one is the #1 cause of nuisance trips, melted DBs and unprotected appliances in Pakistani homes and factories. This guide tells you exactly which "breaker switch" to buy for each application.

Quick Answer — Match Application to Breaker Type

The 7 Types of "Breaker Switch" in Pakistan

1. MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker)

The most common "breaker switch" in any Pakistani home or office DB. Standard ratings 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, 25A, 32A, 40A, 50A, 63A. Available in single-pole, double-pole, triple-pole, four-pole. IEC 60898 residential or IEC 60947-2 industrial. Choose curve B for resistive loads, C for mixed loads (default), D for motor loads.

2. MCCB (Moulded Case Circuit Breaker)

Larger industrial breaker for currents 32A to 1,600A. Adjustable thermal+magnetic trip on premium models. Breaking capacity 25kA to 65kA — survives short-circuits that would weld an MCB closed. Always 3-pole or 4-pole in factory settings.

3. RCCB / RCD (Residual Current Circuit Breaker / Residual Current Device)

Detects earth leakage current — trips when 30mA (or 100mA for selectivity) flows from live to earth. Saves you from electrocution on a faulty appliance. Mandatory on bathroom circuits, swimming pool circuits, garden/outdoor sockets. Available 2-pole (single-phase) or 4-pole (3-phase).

4. RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent)

RCCB + MCB combined in one DIN-rail module. Single device handles both earth-leakage trip and overcurrent trip. Saves DB space. Preferred for new construction.

5. ACB (Air Circuit Breaker)

Heavy-duty industrial main breaker, 630A to 6,300A. Used as factory main, generator output breaker, or transformer secondary breaker. Adjustable LSIG (Long-time, Short-time, Instantaneous, Ground) protection. Manual or motorised operation.

6. DC MCB / Solar Circuit Breaker

Polarity-aware (PV+ / PV−) DC breaker for solar PV strings, battery banks, EV traction. Voltage ratings 250V / 500V / 1000V / 1500V depending on string size. Never substitute an AC MCB on DC — the arc will not extinguish, fire risk.

7. WiFi Smart Breaker

App-controlled breaker for remote on/off, scheduling, kWh monitoring, leak alerts. Common applications: geyser scheduling, AC remote-off when leaving home, pump auto-control. Tuya / Smart Life ecosystem.

How to Size a Breaker Switch — The Math

The breaker rating must be:

  1. At least equal to the load current (so it doesn't nuisance trip)
  2. Less than or equal to the cable ampacity (so the cable doesn't overheat before the breaker trips)
  3. Selected for the load type via the trip curve (B/C/D)

For a typical 1.5 ton AC drawing 8A continuous with 12A startup:

  • Load current: 8A → minimum breaker: 10A
  • Startup current: 12A for 1-2 sec → curve C handles this comfortably
  • Cable: 2.5mm² copper ampacity ~24A → 16A breaker is safe
  • Conclusion: 16A curve C MCB on 2.5mm² cable

Curve B vs C vs D vs K — Which Trip Characteristic?

Curve Magnetic Trip Application
B 3-5× In Lighting, heaters, resistive loads, long cable runs
C 5-10× In General-purpose, sockets, mixed loads (default home)
D 10-20× In Motor loads, transformers, large inrush appliances
K 8-12× In Motor-protection specific, machine tool industry

Why Pakistan Has So Many Nuisance Trips

The most common cause of "my breaker keeps tripping" in Pakistan is using a curve B MCB on a load with high startup current. A 1 HP submersible pump draws 4-5A continuous but 25-30A for 200ms during startup. A 10A curve B MCB trips magnetically at 30-50A — well within the inrush envelope.

Fix: upgrade to curve C (10A C handles up to 100A inrush) or curve D for the pump circuit specifically. Don't just upsize the breaker to 25A — that defeats the cable protection.

Breaking Capacity (kA) — The Number That Saves Lives

kA rating tells you the maximum short-circuit current the breaker can safely interrupt without exploding. Pakistani grid short-circuit levels:

  • Residential single-phase (LT supply): 3-6 kA → 6kA MCB sufficient (IEC 60898 default)
  • Commercial 3-phase (HT-fed): 10-25 kA → 10kA or 15kA MCB; or MCCB 25kA
  • Industrial factory (own transformer): 25-50 kA → MCCB 35-50kA mandatory
  • Generator output bus: calculate from generator nameplate; typically 4-12 kA

Using a 6kA MCB downstream of a 50kA prospective short-circuit means the MCB will EXPLODE during a fault — fire and shrapnel. Always check the upstream Short-Circuit-at-Origin value before selecting the breaker.

FAQs

What is the price of a breaker switch in Pakistan?

CNC breaker switches: MCB 16A from Rs.380; RCCB 30mA 2P Rs.2,200; RCBO 16A Rs.1,800; MCCB 100A 3P Rs.4,400; ACB 630A Rs.62,000; DC MCB 1000V Rs.1,200; WiFi smart breaker Rs.5,400. See pricing chart above for full breakdown.

Which breaker for a 1.5 ton AC?

16A curve C single-pole MCB on a 2.5mm² copper feeder is correct for a 1.5 ton inverter AC. Add a 30mA RCBO if the AC outdoor unit is exposed to rain.

MCB vs MCCB — when to switch from one to the other?

Use MCB up to 63A residential. Use MCCB above 63A or wherever the prospective short-circuit current exceeds 10kA. Use MCCB always for 3-phase factory mains.

Do I need an RCD on every circuit?

Pakistani electrical code requires RCD on bathroom, kitchen, outdoor and pool circuits at minimum. International best practice is RCBO on every final circuit. Cost penalty is Rs.1,500-2,500 per circuit — worth it for the life-safety benefit.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Three most common causes: (1) cumulative load exceeds rating — measure with clamp meter; (2) curve B used where curve C is needed for motor inrush; (3) earth leakage — try unplugging appliances one at a time. If immediate retrip on no load → likely faulty wiring or appliance.
