What Is a Selector Switch?

A selector switch is a rotary device with multiple positions that routes a single circuit between several inputs. Unlike a toggle switch (two states) or push button (momentary), a selector stays in whichever position you turn it to. The most common uses in Pakistani electrical work are:

• Voltmeter / ammeter selection — one meter reads each of the three phases through the switch.
• Motor mode selection — auto / off / manual (the classic 1-0-2 pattern).
• Source selection — between two sensors, two control circuits, or two control modes.
• Phase rotation — heavy-duty cam switches for motor starters (forward / off / reverse).

The internal mechanism is a cam-operated rotary shaft that opens and closes contact pairs in a defined sequence as you turn the knob. Each position locks with a detent click; some industrial designs add key-lock or spring-return options.

2-Position, 3-Position, 4-Position — Which Layout Do You Need?

This is the most common question we get on selector switches.

2-position (ON / OFF): Like a toggle but with rotary feel. Used where a screwdriver-lockable position is required, or for control inputs that must be deliberately reset.

3-position (Auto / Off / Manual or 1 / 0 / 2): The single most common configuration in motor control and pumping. Center is OFF; the two sides are AUTO (controlled by external relay / float / sensor) and MANUAL (run-by-hand). The 1-0-2 designation is the same thing in IEC pole notation.

4-position (R, Y, B, OFF): Standard ammeter selector layout. Pick R, Y, or B to read that phase's current; OFF disconnects the meter from all CT secondaries (the CT loop remains closed internally).

7-position (3 L-L, 3 L-N, OFF): Standard voltmeter selector. RY, YB, BR for line-to-line voltage; R-N, Y-N, B-N for line-to-neutral; OFF in between.

Phase Selector Switch vs Diverter Switch — Are They the Same?

No — they sit at different points in the electrical chain.

Selector switch: low-current device (10-32 A typical) used on the metering or control side. Selects which signal feeds a meter or control input. Mounted in panel cutouts, never carries load current.

Diverter switch / changeover switch: high-current device (32 A – 250 A+) used on the power side. Physically switches the actual load between two sources. Mounted on DIN rail or as a panel device — see CNC Changeover Switches.

Plain English: the selector tells the meter what to look at. The diverter tells the load which source to draw from.

Selector Switch Wiring — How to Connect

Voltmeter selector (7-position): Connect R, Y, B (three phases) and N (neutral) to four input terminals. The output terminals (typically marked V+ / V−) connect to the voltmeter. As you rotate the knob, internal cam contacts route the appropriate phase pair to the meter:

1. RY: input R → V+, input Y → V−
2. YB: Y → V+, B → V−
3. BR: B → V+, R → V−
4. R-N: R → V+, N → V−
5. Y-N: Y → V+, N → V−
6. B-N: B → V+, N → V−
7. OFF: meter disconnected

Ammeter selector (4-position): Wire the three CT secondaries (1S1/1S2, 2S1/2S2, 3S1/3S2 from R, Y, B current transformers) to the switch input terminals. The output goes to the ammeter. Critical: the selector must short the unselected CTs internally — never break an active CT secondary or you will get dangerous open-CT voltage (kV-class).

Distribution board (DB): Standard placement on 3-phase DBs for voltage/current monitoring. Cutout in the panel door, voltmeter/ammeter beside the selector knob.

Generator panel: Voltmeter selector for monitoring genset output voltage on each phase before paralleling or load-on. Ammeter selector for genset loading monitoring.

Motor control centre (MCC): 3-position (auto/off/manual) for each motor circuit. Allows electrician hand-test without disabling the auto control system.

• Position 1 (AUTO): Motor runs when the external automation says to. Float switch closes → contactor energises → motor runs.
• Position 0 (OFF): Motor cannot run from any source. Lockable position for service work.
• Position 2 (MANUAL): Motor runs directly from the control supply, bypassing the automation. Used for test, fill, drain, or override.

Wiring is typically two NO contacts in parallel — one closed in AUTO (in series with the float/sensor), one closed in MANUAL (bypassing it). Both off in the centre OFF position.
