VA Selector Switch — Pakistan Quick Answer (May 2026)
A VA selector switch (Voltmeter / Ammeter selector switch) is the rotary cam switch used on the front of industrial control panels to route the panel's single voltmeter or ammeter between different phases (R-Y-B) and lines for measurement. It's an electrical panel essential — every 3-phase factory main board has 2 of them (one for V, one for A). CNC 2026 prices range from Rs. 450 (panel-mount 16A) to Rs. 2,800 (heavy-duty 63A multi-pole).
| Type | Positions | Application | 2026 PKR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voltmeter Selector (VS) | 7 positions (RY, YB, BR, RN, YN, BN, OFF) | Select phase pair for voltmeter reading | 450 |
| Ammeter Selector (AS) | 4 positions (R, Y, B, OFF) | Select phase for current reading via CT | 450 |
| 3-position changeover (1-0-2) | Source-1 / OFF / Source-2 | Manual changeover, source selection | 650–1,200 |
| Heavy-duty cam selector (63A) | Custom 4-12 positions | Industrial control circuits | 2,800 |
Quick decision: Standard 3-phase panel needs 1× VS (voltmeter selector) + 1× AS (ammeter selector) = PKR 900 pair. Panel-mount only; not for load switching above the rated current.

What Is a Selector Switch?
A selector switch is a rotary device with multiple positions that routes a single circuit between several inputs. Unlike a toggle switch (two states) or push button (momentary), a selector stays in whichever position you turn it to. The most common uses in Pakistani electrical work are:
- Voltmeter / ammeter selection — one meter reads each of the three phases through the switch.
- Motor mode selection — auto / off / manual (the classic 1-0-2 pattern).
- Source selection — between two sensors, two control circuits, or two control modes.
- Phase rotation — heavy-duty cam switches for motor starters (forward / off / reverse).
The internal mechanism is a cam-operated rotary shaft that opens and closes contact pairs in a defined sequence as you turn the knob. Each position locks with a detent click; some industrial designs add key-lock or spring-return options.
Voltmeter Selector vs Ammeter Selector
| Feature | Voltmeter Selector (V) | Ammeter Selector (A) |
|---|---|---|
| What it reads | Voltage across or to neutral | Current through each phase via CT |
| Positions | 7 (3 line-line + 3 line-neutral + OFF) | 4 (R, Y, B, OFF) |
| Internal wiring | Direct phase connection | CT secondary loop (must close all CTs) |
| Critical safety note | Standard switching | CT secondary must remain closed when changing positions — never break a CT secondary under load |
| Typical panel use | 3-phase DB monitoring | Motor / load current monitoring |
| CNC price | Rs. 1,350 | Rs. 1,350 |
Both are stocked in 20 A LW28 panel-mount housing — see Voltmeter Selector and Ampere Selector.
2-Position, 3-Position, 4-Position — Which Layout Do You Need?
This is the most common question we get on selector switches.
2-position (ON / OFF): Like a toggle but with rotary feel. Used where a screwdriver-lockable position is required, or for control inputs that must be deliberately reset.
3-position (Auto / Off / Manual or 1 / 0 / 2): The single most common configuration in motor control and pumping. Center is OFF; the two sides are AUTO (controlled by external relay / float / sensor) and MANUAL (run-by-hand). The 1-0-2 designation is the same thing in IEC pole notation.
4-position (R, Y, B, OFF): Standard ammeter selector layout. Pick R, Y, or B to read that phase's current; OFF disconnects the meter from all CT secondaries (the CT loop remains closed internally).
7-position (3 L-L, 3 L-N, OFF): Standard voltmeter selector. RY, YB, BR for line-to-line voltage; R-N, Y-N, B-N for line-to-neutral; OFF in between.
Phase Selector Switch vs Diverter Switch — Are They the Same?
No — they sit at different points in the electrical chain.
Selector switch: low-current device (10-32 A typical) used on the metering or control side. Selects which signal feeds a meter or control input. Mounted in panel cutouts, never carries load current.
Diverter switch / changeover switch: high-current device (32 A – 250 A+) used on the power side. Physically switches the actual load between two sources. Mounted on DIN rail or as a panel device — see CNC Changeover Switches.
Plain English: the selector tells the meter what to look at. The diverter tells the load which source to draw from.
Selector Switch Wiring — How to Connect
Voltmeter selector (7-position): Connect R, Y, B (three phases) and N (neutral) to four input terminals. The output terminals (typically marked V+ / V−) connect to the voltmeter. As you rotate the knob, internal cam contacts route the appropriate phase pair to the meter:
- RY: input R → V+, input Y → V−
- YB: Y → V+, B → V−
- BR: B → V+, R → V−
- R-N: R → V+, N → V−
- Y-N: Y → V+, N → V−
- B-N: B → V+, N → V−
- OFF: meter disconnected
Ammeter selector (4-position): Wire the three CT secondaries (1S1/1S2, 2S1/2S2, 3S1/3S2 from R, Y, B current transformers) to the switch input terminals. The output goes to the ammeter. Critical: the selector must short the unselected CTs internally — never break an active CT secondary or you will get dangerous open-CT voltage (kV-class).
Where to Install a Selector Switch
Distribution board (DB): Standard placement on 3-phase DBs for voltage/current monitoring. Cutout in the panel door, voltmeter/ammeter beside the selector knob.
Generator panel: Voltmeter selector for monitoring genset output voltage on each phase before paralleling or load-on. Ammeter selector for genset loading monitoring.
Motor control centre (MCC): 3-position (auto/off/manual) for each motor circuit. Allows electrician hand-test without disabling the auto control system.
Solar inverter panel: Voltmeter selector for grid-side voltage monitoring. Useful for verifying balanced 3-phase voltage before allowing inverter to sync.
Industrial panel / switchgear: Cam-style selectors for source switching, control mode, key-lock isolation.

CNC is mid-priced in the value tier with the longest warranty (5 years). Local brands (Clopal, Opas) are cheaper but ship with 1-year warranty and looser contact-rating tolerances. Camsco / Salzer / Schneider are premium but 2-4× the price for the same panel function.
Auto-Manual Selector Switch (1-0-2 / Auto-Off-Hand)
The 3-position auto/off/manual selector — sometimes called a 1-0-2 switch or H-O-A (hand-off-auto) — is the standard control element for any motor or pump that has both an automatic trigger (float switch, pressure switch, timer) and a manual override.
- Position 1 (AUTO): Motor runs when the external automation says to. Float switch closes → contactor energises → motor runs.
- Position 0 (OFF): Motor cannot run from any source. Lockable position for service work.
- Position 2 (MANUAL): Motor runs directly from the control supply, bypassing the automation. Used for test, fill, drain, or override.
Wiring is typically two NO contacts in parallel — one closed in AUTO (in series with the float/sensor), one closed in MANUAL (bypassing it). Both off in the centre OFF position.

Frequently Asked Questions — Selector Switch Pakistan
What is a selector switch?
A selector switch is a rotary device with multiple positions that routes a single circuit between several inputs. Common uses are voltmeter / ammeter selection on 3-phase panels, motor mode selection (auto / off / manual), and control-source switching. The knob stays in whichever position you turn it to — unlike a push button, which springs back.
What is the cost of a selector switch in Pakistan?
CNC LW28 voltmeter and ammeter selector switches are priced at Rs. 1,350 each in 20 A panel-mount housing. Local brands (Clopal, Opas) start from Rs. 900; premium imported brands (Camsco, Salzer, Schneider) go from Rs. 1,800 to Rs. 5,000 depending on rating and position count.
What is the difference between a diverter switch and a selector switch?
A selector switch is a low-current control device (10-32 A) that routes a meter or signal between inputs — it does not carry load current. A diverter switch (also called a changeover switch) is a high-current power device (32-250 A) that physically switches the actual electrical load between two sources, such as WAPDA and generator. Selector = metering side; diverter = power side.
What are 3-position selector switches used for?
The 3-position selector switch (commonly labelled auto / off / manual or 1-0-2 or H-O-A) is the standard control element for motors and pumps that have both automatic triggers (float switch, timer) and manual override. Position 0 (OFF) is lockable for maintenance; position 1 (AUTO) routes control through the automation; position 2 (MANUAL) energises the motor directly for test or override.
What is a voltmeter selector switch?
A voltmeter selector switch is a 7-position rotary switch used on 3-phase distribution boards to read voltage across any line-to-line or line-to-neutral combination using a single voltmeter. The seven positions are RY, YB, BR (line-to-line), R-N, Y-N, B-N (line-to-neutral), and OFF.
What is an ammeter selector switch?
An ammeter selector switch is a 4-position rotary switch used to read current from each phase of a 3-phase system via current transformers (CTs). The four positions are R, Y, B, and OFF. The switch internally shorts unselected CT secondaries to prevent dangerous open-CT voltage.
Can I use a 20 A selector switch on a 32 A panel?
Only if the selector switch sits on the metering or control side (CT secondary, voltmeter input). A selector switch never carries primary load current — the CT or voltmeter front-end provides isolation and current step-down. For load-side switching at 32 A or higher, use a changeover switch or contactor instead.
What size cutout do I need for a panel-mount selector switch?
Standard CNC LW28 selector switches mount in a 22 mm round panel cutout for the rotary stem, with a square 48 mm bezel. Larger industrial cam-style selectors (Camsco, Salzer) typically use 60-72 mm square cutouts. Always confirm cutout dimensions from the product datasheet before drilling.
Is there an automatic version of a selector switch?
For voltage / current selection, the modern automatic equivalent is a multi-function digital meter (like the CNC YD52-2066 DIN-rail meter) that reads all phases simultaneously without manual selection. For motor mode auto-switching, the equivalent is a programmable PLC or a contactor-based interlock — but the mechanical 3-position selector remains the simplest, cheapest, and most reliable option for hand-test workflows.
Do CNC selector switches comply with IEC standards?
Yes. CNC LW28 selector switches comply with IEC 60947-3 (low-voltage switchgear and controlgear, switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse-combination units). The 5-year warranty covers contact wear and detent mechanism integrity under rated use.
