SPD Class I / Class II / Class III Pakistan 2026 — Surge Protection Sizing Guide for Solar, Home, Commercial
Which SPD class do I need for my Pakistani install?
Pick by where the SPD sits in your electrical hierarchy: Type 1 (Class I) at the service-entrance for sites with a building-mounted lightning rod, Type 2 (Class II) at the main DB box for everyone, Type 3 (Class III) at the wall outlet for medical / IT / AV equipment. A typical Pakistani residential install uses just Type 2 at the main DB. A 10-marla house with a roof-mounted lightning rod adds Type 1 at the service entrance. A factory or commercial tower uses Type 1 + Type 2 cascaded with proper energy coordination per IEC 61643-12. Solar prosumers need TWO Type 2 SPDs: one AC on the inverter output side, one DC PV-type on the combiner-box side at 1000V or 1500V Uc to match the string voltage.
The 3 SPD classes side-by-side
| Class | Test waveform | Iimp / In / Imax | Install point | Pakistani price (Type 2 ref) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class I (Type 1) | 10/350 µs (direct lightning) | Iimp 12.5–25 kA | Service entrance (with rod) | PKR 7,000–18,000 |
| Class II (Type 2) | 8/20 µs (indirect surge) | In 20 kA, Imax 40 kA | Main DB box, sub-DB | PKR 2,500–9,500 (AC) / PKR 2,900–8,600 (DC PV) |
| Class III (Type 3) | Combined 1.2/50 + 8/20 µs | In 3–10 kA, Uoc 6 kV | Wall outlet, near sensitive load | PKR 800–3,500 |
| Type 1+2 combo | Both waveforms | Iimp 12.5 + In 20 kA | Service entrance (no rod) | PKR 6,500–15,000 |
The Pakistani sizing decision tree
Q1. Does the building have a lightning rod (Franklin rod) on the roof? — YES → you need Type 1 at the service entrance. NO → skip Type 1.
Q2. Do you have a main DB box? — YES (everyone) → you need Type 2 AC on the AC mains. CNC YCS6-B at 275V (1P) or 385V (3P+N).
Q3. Do you have solar PV? — YES → add Type 2 DC PV at the combiner box. CNC YCS6-C at 600V / 1000V / 1500V Uc matching string voltage.
Q4. Do you have medical, IT, AV, or laboratory equipment? — YES → add Type 3 at the equipment outlet.
Q5. What is your service Isc (prospective short-circuit current)? — >10 kA at the service drop → verify SPD's short-circuit withstand — use HRC fuse upstream of SPD per IEC 60364-5-53.
Selection by Pakistani property size
| Property | Recommended SPD set | Total cost (PKR) |
|---|---|---|
| 2-bed apartment / 5-marla home | 1 × YCS6-B 1P+N 275V Type 2 at main DB | ~3,500 |
| 10-marla 3-phase house | 1 × YCS6-B 4P 385V Type 2 at main DB | ~6,500 |
| 10-marla with lightning rod | Above + 1 × YCS6-B Type 1+2 combo at service entrance | ~14,000 |
| 5 kW residential solar | Add 1 × YCS6-C 2P 1000V DC at combiner | +3,700 |
| 15 kW commercial solar (1500V string) | 1 × YCS6-C 2P 1500V DC at combiner + AC Type 2 at inverter output | +12,000 |
| Office / clinic / pharmacy | Type 2 at main DB + Type 3 at sensitive-equipment outlets | ~10,000 |
| Small factory main panel | Type 1+2 combo at incoming + Type 2 at each sub-DB | ~25,000–45,000 |
The Uc voltage rating — matching SPD to your system
The SPD's continuous operating voltage (Uc) must be above your system's maximum continuous voltage. Pakistani-friendly Uc values:
| System | Nominal V | Min SPD Uc | Common SPD Uc |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-phase residential | 220–240 V | 253 V | 275 V |
| 3-phase TN-S 400 V LL | 400 V LL / 230 V L-N | 253 V (L-N) | 385 V (L-PE) |
| 3-phase IT / TT systems | 400 V LL | 440 V | 440 V (L-PE) |
| 12 V / 48 V DC battery | 14–58 V | 75 V | 150 V (or 600 V if shared with PV) |
| Residential PV 1000 V string | 600–1000 V DC | 1100 V | 1000 V or 1200 V |
| Commercial PV 1500 V string | 1000–1500 V DC | 1650 V | 1500 V |
Solar prosumer install — both AC and DC needed
A common Pakistani solar mistake is installing only an AC SPD at the main DB while leaving the PV string unprotected. A direct lightning strike on the roof PV panels can push 50 kA of differential transient straight into your inverter MPPT, blowing it out for ~PKR 80,000–200,000 in damage. The correct setup:
- DC SPD (CNC YCS6-C) at the combiner box on the array side — clamps PV string surges before they reach the MPPT inputs. Match Uc to string voltage (1000V or 1500V).
- AC SPD (CNC YCS6-B) at the inverter output / main DB — clamps grid-side surges.
- Earth bonding — all PV frames + DB earth + inverter chassis bonded to a single equipotential reference (per IEC 60364-7-712).
- SPD replacement schedule — the green/red status indicator on YCS6 cartridges flips to red when MOV is degraded; check quarterly and replace cartridge (not whole SPD — CNC uses plug-in cartridges for field replacement).
Common Pakistani SPD mistakes
- Buying Type 3 only — a wall-outlet SPD without Type 2 at the main DB is useless; the surge has already done damage upstream.
- Forgetting DC PV SPD on solar — AC-only protection leaves the inverter MPPT exposed to PV-side lightning.
- Wrong Uc on 1500V string — using a 600V DC SPD on a 1500V string means the SPD MOV conducts continuously, overheats, and fails open. Always Uc > 1.1× nominal.
- No upstream HRC fuse — if SPD fails short-circuit, the fault current must be cleared. Per IEC 60364-5-53 use gG fuse 32/50/100/160 A depending on SPD model.
- Skipping earth bonding — the SPD diverts surge to earth; if earth bond is poor, the surge stays in the line. Verify <5 Ω earth resistance.
- Not replacing degraded SPD cartridges — status indicator goes red, then SPD silently fails open. Quarterly visual check is mandatory.
- Sub-spec L-N + L-PE clamping — for residential 1P+N, both L-N and L-PE modes must be protected. Check the SPD module count: 1P+N variant has 2 modules (one for each pair).
SPD vs voltage protector vs stabilizer — three different jobs
| Device | Protects against | Response time |
|---|---|---|
| SPD | Microsecond transients (lightning, switching) | < 25 ns |
| Voltage Protector | Steady-state over/under-voltage (broken neutral, brown-out) | < 40 ms |
| Voltage Stabilizer | Sustained sag — regulates voltage to ~220 V | ~500 ms |
All three address different problem classes. A complete Pakistani install often has all three.
