Push Button Basics — Momentary vs Maintained
Every push button operates one or more contact blocks (NO — normally open, or NC — normally closed). The difference between push button types is what happens when you press them:
- Momentary push button — contacts change state ONLY while finger pressure is applied. Release the button → contacts spring back. Used for motor start / stop, doorbell, lift call buttons.
- Maintained push button (push-push / push-pull) — first press latches the contact open or closed; second press releases. Used for power on/off, hold-down emergency stop after press.
- Emergency stop mushroom button — maintained type with a large red mushroom head, twist-to-release. Standard safety device on any motor or hazardous machine. Mandatory under IEC 60204-1.
22 mm Panel Mount — The Universal Standard
22 mm is the IEC 60947-5-1 standard mounting hole diameter for industrial control buttons. Every push button, selector switch, indicator lamp, and emergency stop from CNC and global brands (Schneider XB4, Siemens 3SU, ABB CP) uses this hole. Drill or punch a 22.5 mm hole in your control panel and any 22 mm device slots in.
Push Button Types — Pakistani Control Panel Catalogue
Standard Flush Push Button
Round, flush-mounted, momentary action. The everyday workhorse for start / stop buttons on motor starters. Available colours: green (start), red (stop), yellow (reset), blue (auxiliary), white (lamp test), black (general).
- CNC LAY5 / LA38 22 mm flush — Rs.275
- Configurations: 1NO, 1NC, 2NO, 2NC, 1NO+1NC, 2NO+2NC
Extended / Raised Push Button
Same as flush but with a 10 mm raised actuator. Easier to press while wearing gloves. Used in industrial / outdoor sites.
- CNC LAY5 raised — Rs.290
Illuminated LED Push Button
Push button with a built-in LED indicator behind the lens. When energised, the button lights up — confirming machine state ("RUN" lamp inside the start button). Available in 24 V DC and 220 V AC.
- CNC LAY5 illuminated 22 mm — Rs.450 to Rs.620
- LED colours: green, red, yellow, white, blue
Emergency Stop (Mushroom) Button
Large red mushroom-head maintained-action button. Press in → contacts open and stay open. Twist-to-release (or pull, depending on model). Mandatory safety device on any motor circuit, lift, conveyor, or hazardous machine per IEC 60204-1.
- CNC LAY5 E-stop 40 mm head — Rs.550
- Standard: 1NC contact wired in series with the motor coil so pressing immediately drops the contactor
Selector Switch (Rotary)
Not a push button but mounts in the same 22 mm hole. 2-position, 3-position, or 4-position rotary handle. Used for HAND / OFF / AUTO mode selection, motor direction, source selection.
- CNC LAY5 2-position — Rs.380
- CNC LAY5 3-position spring-return — Rs.480

DOL Motor Starter — Classic Push Button Wiring
The most common Pakistani use of push buttons: a Direct-On-Line (DOL) motor starter built around two push buttons (green START + red STOP) controlling a magnetic contactor. The standard control circuit:
- Live in → STOP push button (NC contact) in series → START push button (NO contact) in series → contactor coil A1
- Contactor coil A2 → Neutral
- Contactor auxiliary NO contact — wired in parallel across the START button (the "seal-in" or "hold-in" contact)
- Result: press START → coil energises → main contacts close → motor runs AND seal-in contact closes → release START button, motor keeps running. Press STOP → break in series → coil drops → motor stops AND seal-in opens (must press START again to restart).
Reversing Motor Control — FORWARD / REVERSE / STOP Pattern
A 3-button reversing starter uses two contactors (FWD + REV) interlocked so they can never close simultaneously:
- STOP (red, NC) — breaks BOTH coil circuits
- FORWARD (green, NO) — energises FWD contactor coil, sealed in via FWD auxiliary
- REVERSE (yellow, NO) — energises REV contactor coil, sealed in via REV auxiliary
- Interlock — FWD NC auxiliary in series with REV coil, and vice versa. Mechanical interlock between the two contactors as belt-and-braces.
Pressing FORWARD while motor is in REVERSE: nothing happens (REV NC interlock blocks FWD coil) — operator must press STOP first. Prevents motor windings from being slammed into reverse, which would damage them and trip the upstream MCCB.
Common Mistakes in Pakistani Control Panels
- Using a single NO contact for STOP. A broken wire on the STOP button → motor can't stop. Always use NC (normally closed) for STOP — broken wire = motor stops automatically.
- Skipping the emergency stop mushroom on motor circuits. Operator's hand caught in a conveyor with only flush STOP buttons → can't find it fast enough. E-stop is mandatory under IEC 60204-1.
- Wiring illuminated buttons without confirming voltage. 220 V LED button on a 24 V control circuit → LED never lights. 24 V LED button on 220 V → burns out instantly. Read the model code.
- Using flush buttons where gloves are worn. Welders, foundry workers can't accurately press flush buttons. Use raised actuators or 30 mm mushroom heads in those environments.
- Mounting push buttons in 19 mm holes instead of 22 mm. Old British / imperial panels sometimes have 19 mm cutouts. The 22 mm push button will wobble and the lock nut won't engage. Re-drill to 22 mm.
Push Button + Contact Block Combinations
CNC LAY5 / LA38 push buttons separate the operator head (top half) from the contact block (bottom half). Mix and match:
| Need | Head | Contact Block |
|---|---|---|
| Motor START | Green flush momentary | 1NO |
| Motor STOP | Red flush momentary | 1NC |
| Lamp test | Black flush momentary | 1NO |
| Run indicator (no button) | Green LED only | — (lamp only) |
| Illuminated START with seal-in | Green illuminated momentary | 1NO + LED 24V |
| EMERGENCY STOP | Red mushroom 40 mm maintained | 2NC (redundant safety) |
| HAND/OFF/AUTO selector | 3-position rotary | 1NO + 1NO (independent positions) |

Lift Call & Cabin Buttons
Lift industry uses momentary illuminated buttons with feedback LEDs (lit when pressed, stays lit until floor reached). 22 mm mounting fits the standard COP (Car Operating Panel) and LOP (Landing Operating Panel) cutouts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price of a push button in Pakistan?
CNC push buttons in Pakistan 2026: standard 22 mm flush from Rs.275, illuminated LED from Rs.450, emergency stop mushroom from Rs.550, 2-position selector switch from Rs.380. Bulk pricing available for OEM / system integrators.
What size hole do I drill for a 22 mm push button?
The IEC standard hole size is 22.5 mm (with +0.4 / -0 tolerance). Use a 22.5 mm chassis punch (Q-Max or similar) or step-drill carefully to that size. A standard 22 mm twist drill produces a slightly tight fit — better to use the punch for clean panels.
NO or NC contact for STOP button?
Always NC (normally closed). With NC, a broken wire on the STOP button = motor stops automatically (fail-safe). With NO (normally open), a broken wire = motor cannot be stopped from the button. IEC 60204-1 requires NC for any safety-related stop function.
Do I need an emergency stop on every motor?
If the motor drives any moving part that an operator could be injured by (conveyor, mixer, lift, lathe, drill, pump in confined space), yes — IEC 60204-1 makes it mandatory. For fully enclosed loads with no operator interaction (sealed compressors, factory blowers behind grilles), an E-stop is best-practice but not legally required.
What is the difference between a push button and a selector switch?
A push button is momentary (most types) — contacts change state only while pressed. A selector switch is maintained — the rotary handle stays in its set position until manually rotated. Selector switches are used for mode selection (HAND/OFF/AUTO) while push buttons are used for actions (start, stop).
Can I get illuminated buttons with 24 V DC LEDs?
Yes. CNC LAY5 illuminated push buttons are available in both 24 V DC and 220 V AC variants. The model code includes the LED voltage. For PLC-controlled panels with 24 V DC control circuits, use the 24 V option. For directly-mains-controlled panels, use 220 V.
What colour code should I use for control panel buttons?
IEC 60073 colour code: green = start/run/normal, red = stop/off/emergency, yellow = caution/intervention, blue = mandatory action, white = no specific meaning / lamp test, black = general purpose. Emergency stop is ALWAYS red mushroom on yellow background.
